Dr. Hope C. Reed earned her doctorate in speech-language pathology from Nova Southeastern University. She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is Professor of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Alabama A & M University. She joined the faculty in 2002 and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in craniofacial anomalies, articulation, phonology, language and fluency courses, as well as methods and materials for school-based SLPs. Most importantly, as a Certified Orofacial Myologist, Dr. Reed established the world’s first university-based clinic for children and adults with orofacial myofunctional disorders. Her research encompasses such topics as health literacy, counseling students and patients, e-learning fatigue, as well as orofacial myofunctional disorders. Following are a few titles of her journal articles: Enhancing the Evidence Base in Orofacial Myology, Inclusion of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders Content for Communication Sciences and Disorders Students, Rationale for Including Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy in University Training Programs. She’s a frequent presenter from international to local conferences and her clinical experience encompasses the public schools, private sector, home health care, Head Start, and university settings. She has worked in the field of speech-language pathology for 25 years. Dr. Reed is on the Editorial Review Board for the International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy: The Official Journal of IAOM, the International Association of Orofacial Myology. Notably, she established and is Chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the (IAOM). She has been recognized in our field. She received the 2008 Distinguished Service Award from the Speech and Hearing Association of Alabama as well as their Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award in 2013. Also in 2013, she was honored at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation's Annual Founders Breakfast as a nominee for the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement. She’s received numerous certificates of appreciation and commendations for her service to the profession.
