Course Review: Assessment of Play Skills in Early Intervention

If you were rushing to complete your CEUs at the end of 2025, let me help you get started early in 2026. Janine’s episode about play assessment will get you on a confident track for this coming year of working with autistic children. Here is a reflection on my experience taking Janine’s 0.2 CEU course, with an exclusive offer to take the course for free at the end.

Assessment of Play Skills in Early Intervention

Janine Benner, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL | 0.2 ASHA CEUs

What I Learned

Almost my entire caseload is young autistic children, so it felt important to me to take this course. I am eager to stay up-to-date on assessment ideas for this heterogeneous population that are not reliant on standardized measures. Although most of the background content was familiar to me (and likely for you too), Janine presented an organized way of thinking about play assessment with accompanying downloads and printables. In particular, I liked the visual about stages of play development (great for families & teachers). I mapped out the stages below, but you need to sign up for the course to see Janine’s.

What I Loved

I really liked the way Janine explained ways to have parents meaningfully contribute to assessments: providing video samples, bringing along familiar items and snacks, informing them about elements they might not expect, and keeping top of mind that they might be really nervous and emotional during the assessment. Janine presented in a way that balanced enthusiasm and information. When I take continuing education, I tend lose interest if the content is either too fluffy or too intense. This was definitely not the case with Janine’s content.

Who I Think Should Take This Course

If you are an early interventionist or preschool SLP, this is the course to take to make sure you have a solid plan for play assessment with autistic children. This is a great choice if you need help getting organized, crafting goals, and building parent involvement with sensitivity.

I hope that this course rundown gets you excited about taking Janine’s course! Assessment of Play Skills in Early Intervention is available for 0.2 CEUs.

If you aren’t already subscribed to Speech Therapy PD, you can actually get this course for free by using my code GESTALT33.
