Edward Chang

Dr. Edward Chang is a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco, where he is the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Margaret Liu Collins and Edward B. Collins Distinguished Professor in Neurological Surgery. His research focuses on the brain mechanisms underlying human speech, movement, emotion, and learning, with a particular emphasis on understanding how the brain perceives and produces speech. He also co-directs the Center for Neural Engineering & Prostheses at UC Berkeley and UCSF, which develops technologies to restore function for people with neurological disabilities. Chang earned his medical degree and completed his neurosurgical residency at UCSF and completed postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2020, received the National Academy of Sciences' Pradel Research Award in 2022, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2025 for his research on how the human brain perceives and produces speech
