Benjamin Bergen

Benjamin K. Bergen, Ph.D., is Professor and the Atkinson Family Endowed Chair in the Department of Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego, where he directs the Language and Cognition Lab and serves as Associate Dean for Research in the School of Social Sciences. His research examines language processing, production, and learning, with a particular emphasis on how humans and machines represent and construct meaning. His work spans embodied language comprehension, linguistic meaning and grammar, large language models, and the cognitive science of profanity. He is the author of Louder Than Words: The New Science of How the Mind Makes Meaning and What the F: What Swearing Reveals About Our Language, Our Brains, and Ourselves.
