MS, CCC-SLP
Melissa Capo, M.S., CCC/SLP, is an SLP in Albany, NY, and a Clinical Education Support Specialist in the online Speech@Emerson program at Emerson College. She has over 25 years of experience working with adults with Acquired Brain Injury and co-occurring disabilities, including substance abuse and mental health disorders. Her work is heavily influenced by Dr. Mark Ylvisaker and his person-driven, collaborative approach to improving the quality of life for individuals following ABI. Melissa was a clinical supervisor in the Neurogenic Communication Disorders program at The College of St. Rose for 20 years and worked in a senior role with the New York State Neurobehavioral Resource Project. She has spent most of her 25-year career working with adults and adolescents with acquired neurogenic cognitive, communicative, and behavioral impairments in schools, supported living environments, and community-based home and clinic settings. Her clinical interests focus on increasing life participation and reducing communication, behavioral, and self-regulatory obstacles with a genuine, person-driven, and collaborative approach. Melissa has presented nationally and internationally on topics related to project-oriented intervention with adults after ABI, literacy in adults with ABI, Cognitive-communication group interventions, communication partner training, and positive behavioral supports. Part of this project-oriented intervention is the facilitation of a co-designed Podcast about the lived experience ("Effit, I Have a Brain Injury") and the work on an ongoing Positive Behavior Support research and training project through Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
