Amanda Stead, PhD, CCC-SLP, CHSE, is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education within the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders. She earned her PhD from Louisiana State University in 2011, focusing on the relationship between language, assessment, and Alzheimer’s disease. Her passion for working with individuals with dementia stems from personal family experience and her time in long-term care settings. She is dedicated to educating students and the broader community about the vital role speech-language pathologists play in dementia care.
In addition to teaching a course on progressive illness and dementia, Dr. Stead leads graduate courses in communication and aging, counseling, and aphasia. She was honored with a teaching award from the Oregon Speech-Language and Hearing Association in 2013. Her current research explores the intersections of technology, discourse, aging, and dementia, with the goal of developing more patient-friendly assessments of memory and language to reduce distress and enhance clinical preparedness.
