Hyperkinetic Dysarthria

Hyperkinetic Dysarthria

Overview:

A dysarthria associated with basal ganglia control circuit pathology, characterized by abnormal involuntary movements that disrupt normal speech. Depending on the specific movement disorder (e.g. chorea, dystonia, tremor), speech features can include sudden, irregular articulatory breakdowns, voice stoppages, excessive variations in loudness or pitch, and intermittent distortions as involuntary movements of the face, tongue, or larynx interfere with articulation. This gives the speech a jerky, unpredictable quality, in contrast to the more steady monotone of hypokinetic dysarthria.
