A profound aphasia involving severe impairment of all language functions, both expressive and receptive. Affected individuals may be nearly mute or only produce non-word sounds and cannot understand or follow even simple commands (aside from possibly responding to voice intonation). This condition usually results from a large perisylvian lesion affecting both Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas and often presents with an accompanying right hemiparesis.
