Dyskinesia refers to involuntary, uncontrolled movements that interfere with voluntary motor control. It often affects speech and swallowing when orofacial muscles are involved, as in hyperkinetic dysarthria. These movements may occur in conditions like Parkinson’s disease or cerebral palsy. SLPs treat dyskinesia-related communication and feeding issues by targeting motor control and compensatory strategies.
