Videofluoroscopy

Videofluoroscopy

Overview:

Videofluoroscopy, or the Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS), is an instrumental imaging procedure used to evaluate swallowing physiology in real time. It provides dynamic visualization of bolus flow, airway protection, and structural movement from oral to esophageal phases. SLPs use this tool to diagnose dysphagia, determine aspiration risk, and guide treatment planning. The procedure requires interprofessional collaboration with radiologists and careful interpretation. Videofluoroscopy is considered the gold standard for objective swallowing assessment.
