Bolus

Overview:

A bolus is the cohesive mass of food or liquid that is prepared and propelled through the oral cavity, pharynx, and esophagus during swallowing. Effective bolus formation and control are essential for safe and efficient deglutition. SLPs assess bolus consistency, transit time, and residue through clinical and instrumental evaluations. Modifications to bolus volume, texture, and pacing are common dysphagia interventions. Understanding bolus dynamics is fundamental for preventing aspiration and optimizing nutritional intake.
