Neuromuscular Diseases

Neuromuscular Diseases

Overview:

Neuromuscular diseases encompass a range of conditions that impair the nerves and muscles responsible for movement, including those involved in speech and swallowing. Common conditions include ALS, muscular dystrophy, and myasthenia gravis, which can lead to dysarthria and dysphagia. SLPs evaluate and treat deficits in articulation, voice, and swallowing safety. Intervention includes compensatory strategies, exercises, and augmentative communication when necessary. Timely support from SLPs enhances quality of life and prolongs functional independence.
