Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia

Overview:

Sarcopenia refers to the age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and strength, which can affect muscles critical to speech and swallowing. In older adults, this condition may contribute to dysphagia and reduced endurance for verbal communication. SLPs play a key role in identifying sarcopenic-related swallowing difficulties through clinical and instrumental assessment. Intervention includes safe swallowing strategies, strengthening exercises, and collaboration with dietitians and physicians. Recognizing sarcopenia allows SLPs to mitigate aspiration risk and maintain functional nutrition and communication.
