High-tech AAC refers to augmentative and alternative communication systems that use electronic devices or computer technology to help people communicate. These systems often include speech-generating devices (SGDs) or dedicated communication software on tablets and computers, enabling users to select words or symbols that the device then speaks aloud. High-tech AAC provides a voice for individuals who cannot rely on natural speech, offering features like extensive vocabulary storage, synthesized voice output, and customizable interfaces to suit the user’s needs. SLPs are integral in evaluating and implementing high-tech AAC for clients with complex communication needs— they assess which device or app is most appropriate, program and personalize the system, and train the individual (and their family) to use it effectively for functional communication across settings.
