Tier I to Tier II Vocabulary in Younger Students

Tier I to Tier II Vocabulary in Younger Students

This series will provide a case study for each domain of language, with most covering a younger student and one covering an older student. In this installment of Child Language Case Studies with Margo Kinzer Courter, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL, we meet Kasey, a kindergarten student who continues to struggle with basic concepts, common nouns, and verbs, also known as Tier I vocabulary. These challenges are significantly impacting his ability to communicate wants and needs, follow simple directions, and answer questions in the classroom.

Kasey has been receiving speech therapy services for about a year, yet vocabulary remains a key barrier that is affecting other areas of language development, including inflectional morphology, syntax, and phonological awareness. This case highlights how foundational vocabulary skills influence broader language growth and academic participation.

You will explore targeted intervention strategies to strengthen early vocabulary skills, along with practical ideas for collaborating with educators to support carryover in the classroom. No matter your setting, this session reinforces an essential truth: a child’s most important work is school, and strong language skills are critical for success there.
