This episode features Rick Arenas, Ph.D., and explores stuttering variability and anticipation. One of the core characteristics of stuttering is that it varies a great deal from context to context. When most people think about stuttering variability, they think of overt stuttering. However, there is much more to stuttering than overt behavior. Other aspects of stuttering, like anticipation, also vary a lot based on the context. Dr. Arenas will discuss ongoing research in his lab, looking at the factors that influence both the variability of overt stuttering and stuttering anticipation, how anticipation and variability may be related, and what changes can be made to reduce stuttering anticipation.
