Grounded in the principles of Comprehensive Literacy for All and the Least Dangerous Assumption, this course reframes literacy as a lifelong journey with no prerequisites other than being human. You'll examine how reading, writing, speaking, and listening develop as interconnected language skills and why meaningful access to print and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) should begin immediately, regardless of a learner's current communication abilities.
Designed to establish the foundation for the 10-part series, this course offers SLPs, educators, and interprofessional team members a shared philosophy and practical frameworks for rethinking literacy instruction. You'll learn how to move beyond traditional readiness requirements, create daily opportunities for meaningful engagement with reading and writing, and support learners as they build confidence, take risks, and develop their communication and literacy skills.
