Orofacial myofunctional disorders, to include tongue thrust, have long been present within ASHA’s practice scope. However, to provide comprehensive intervention, the clinician may encounter a range of less-familiar conditions, such as airway disorders, noxious oral habits (thumb-sucking, nail biting, use of pacifier, etc.), ankyloglossia, orthodontic conditions, and sleep disorders, among other conditions. Clinicians must often work collaboratively with other professionals to effectively serve clients. This presentation introduces topics and conditions in addition to tongue thrust that are documented in the recent literature relating to myofunctional disorders. Resources will be shared to inform clinicians of opportunities for specialized training and/or certification in the area of orofacial myofunctional disorders.
