Narrative language supports children’s oral language, reading comprehension, and academic success, but bringing evidence-based narrative intervention into the classroom can be challenging. In this course, Megan Israelsen-Augenstein, PhD, CCC-SLP, examines how school-based SLPs can translate the research on narrative intervention into classroom-based services for students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and other language and literacy difficulties.
The course covers models for implementing narrative intervention in general education settings, including how to identify appropriate students and intervention targets, maintain intervention intensity, and monitor student progress. Megan also discusses ways to collaborate with teachers and integrate oral language instruction into authentic classroom literacy activities.
Through case studies and implementation examples, SLPs will examine common barriers to classroom-based intervention and learn strategies for planning educationally relevant narrative language lessons that fit within school routines. Clinicians will leave with a clearer framework for connecting evidence-based narrative intervention with the day-to-day realities of school-based practice.
