Julia, an eighth-grade student who has received speech-language services since kindergarten, continues to struggle with receptive and expressive vocabulary, reading comprehension, and written language despite years of intervention. In this installment of Child Language Case Studies, Margo Kinzer Courter, MBA, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL, examines how underlying weaknesses in metalinguistic skills contribute to Julia's ongoing language and literacy challenges. Participants will explore how difficulties with vocabulary, sentence comprehension, and syllable knowledge can impact academic success in older students.
Using Julia's case, this course demonstrates practical, evidence-informed strategies for strengthening metalinguistic skills during language intervention. Participants will also learn practical techniques to target metalinguistic skills, support vocabulary and literacy development, and collaborate effectively with educators to improve classroom performance and academic success for older students.
