Margo Kinzer Courter, MBA, MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL presents this Child Language Case Studies session focused on metalinguistic skills in younger children through the case study of Jacob, an 8-year-old second-grade student with ongoing challenges in phonemic awareness, morphological awareness, morphosyntax, multiple-meaning words, answering complex questions, and pragmatic language skills. These difficulties are impacting his ability to communicate effectively across academic and social settings.
Metalinguistic skills allow children to think about, analyze, and manipulate language, supporting success in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This session explores how weaknesses in these areas can affect classroom performance and overall communication development in school-age children.
Through Jacob’s case study, participants will learn practical, evidence-based intervention strategies to support metalinguistic development, language comprehension, and expressive language skills. The course will also highlight collaborative approaches for working with educators to help children carry these skills into the classroom and succeed in their daily academic demands.
