Health literacy is defined as the extent to which a person understands their overall health and well-being. Social determinants of health (SDOH) are factors that influence one’s level of health literacy. This course will explore how SDOH Neighborhood & Built Environment has contributed to health inequities that lead to acquired neurogenic communication disorders resulting from vascular cognitive impairment. Speech-language pathologists have a unique role in improving the health literacy skills of our patients with acquired neurogenic communication disorders. By incorporating elements of health literacy and interdisciplinary collaboration into their treatment plans, speech-language pathologists can improve holistic knowledge of the body for their patients. Participants will leave with strategies to incorporate health literacy into functional goals for their patients.
