Social Context in Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders: NICU to Schools

This course is part three of the five-part series Empowering Providers Through Transforming Pediatric Feeding Journeys. Session 3 explores pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders through a caregiver-centered, socially informed lens, featuring Meg Simione, PhD, CCC-SLP, Emma Justice, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, NTMTC, and Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, BCS-S, FNAP, and moderated by Madi Metcalf, MS, CCC-SLP. Together, they examine how environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic factors, along with caregiver perspectives, shape feeding development, access to care, and long-term outcomes.

Through case-based examples that follow a child from the NICU through early intervention and into school-based services, this session highlights how feeding challenges evolve over time and how social determinants influence both assessment and intervention.

You will gain a clearer understanding of how to apply a holistic perspective across care settings, strengthen interprofessional collaboration, and support continuity of care to improve outcomes for children and their families.
