This intermediate-level course provides common etiologies of swallowing disorders contributed by neurogenic and structural disorders. Rare diseases such as Plummer-Vinson Syndrome (PVS) will be discussed regarding their history, etiology, prevalence, and clinical presentation. The evaluation and treatment of dysphagia will be discussed from the traditional to modern technological approaches. Ethical considerations in the treatment of dysphagia – the role of the speech-language pathologist in determining the decision-making capacity of the patient; the psychosocial impact of dysphagia in terms of the emotional and social ramifications for patient and family as well as quality of life will be covered in this.
