In the DSM-V, exclusion criteria specify that Autism must be ruled out for Selective Mutism to be diagnosed. This contradicts research that shows a high co-occurrence between the two diagnoses. This presentation will address the commonalities between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Selective Mutism (SM) while integrating neurodiversity (ND) concepts. Using criteria identified in recent literature, the prevalence of autistic individuals who also meet the requirements of having selective (situational) mutism will be discussed.
