Alcoholism and alcohol abuse disorders frequently cause acute admissions to medical facilities such as critical care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities. Neurological and medical conditions associated with alcohol withdrawal and/or abuse contribute to the medical burden of dysphagia. Comorbidities also contribute to the medical burden and the financial implications for care. Cultural norms for what is considered a disorder are based on social acceptability, bans on alcohol, and religious preferences. In recent years, an increase in female alcohol abuse disorders resulting in hospitalizations has been reported. Case studies included as well as treatment outcomes.
