In this course, Dr. Tabia Pope takes a deeper dive into the return to learning after a sports concussion by applying their increased knowledge and changed attitudes towards preventive education, counseling, assessment, treatment, and strategies for addressing academic concussion management using interprofessional education and collaborative practices. Dr. Pope guides SLPs on identifying tools and resources for student-athletes who are returning to learning after sustaining a sports concussion and experiencing post-concussion speech, language, hearing, or cognitive-communication disorders. She utilizes case studies and simulations to demonstrate problem-focused interviews, perceptual academic performance instruments, symptom checklists, cognitive-communication assessment instruments, functional assessments, compensatory cognitive strategies, and academic accommodations. Finally, she highlights the expected outcomes when implementing interprofessional academic concussion management protocols.
