In this course, Dr. Tabia Pope introduces the role SLPs play in helping student-athletes return to learning after a sports concussion. She highlights the urgency and need for SLPs across schools and medical settings to become more aware of how prevalent post-concussion symptoms and the accompanying cognitive-communication disorders are among children, adolescents, and young adults. Dr. Pope utilizes case studies to help SLPs conduct differential diagnoses between severity levels, identify student-athlete’s problems and needs, readiness to return to learning, academic accommodations, and resources. SLPs who increase their knowledge and change their attitudes towards these issues are better equipped to understand their role in return-to-learning, including preventive education, counseling, assessment, treatment, and strategies for addressing academic concussion management using interprofessional education and collaborative practices.
