This episode explores the importance of considering the quality of life in the evaluation of stuttering and methods for ensuring appropriate, comprehensive assessment in guiding individualized treatment. The presenter discusses a framework for understanding the impact of stuttering on people’s lives, based on the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). The presenter then highlights how the ICF can guide the assessment process to ensure full consideration of all of the ways that stuttering might lead to adverse impacts. Finally, specific examples of evaluating adverse impact using the Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering (OASES) are used to show clinicians how comprehensive background information leads to more appropriate and individualized treatment.
