Inconsistent Speech Disorder (also called inconsistent phonological disorder) is a subtype of pediatric speech sound disorder characterized by unpredictable pronunciation of the same words. A child with this disorder may say a word several different ways on different attempts, showing variability in errors rather than a consistent pattern. This distinguishes it from more typical phonological delays or articulation disorders, and it is thought to reflect a breakdown in phonological planning (organizing the sounds in words) rather than an inability to produce specific sounds.
