Dementia is a progressive neurological condition characterized by a decline in cognitive functions, including memory, language, attention, and problem-solving skills. From an SLP perspective, it often presents with early deficits in word finding, naming, and discourse organization. Clinicians assess cognitive-communication abilities and provide intervention to support functional communication, memory aids, and caregiver education. Early involvement can maintain quality of life and reduce communication breakdowns. SLPs are essential members of the care team in identifying and treating communication and swallowing issues across the course of dementia.
