This presentation examines the various challenges people have that are the underlying reasons for their inability to produce the “R” sound. The evidence-based rationale for the use of tongue strengthening and proprioceptive awareness exercises will be discussed. Best practices for teaching will be discussed and demonstrated along with various multimodal tools and how these approaches assist with a focus on speech sound production. Therapy techniques will include oral motor therapy, which directly relates to the production of the sound, various placement techniques, and video recording for self-directed and self-reflective learning. Included will be a discussion and examples of self-rating scales and explicit instruction.
