Sensory processing disorder (SPD) can influence a child's functioning across all areas of development and environments. Recognizing the sensory needs of children with sensory processing differences helps speech-language pathologists better understand the children they treat. In this course, Jennifer Ruckner, MS, CCC-SLP, and Sharibeth Cooper, MS, OTR/L, share sensory strategies for the SLP from the combined perspective of a speech-language pathologist and an occupational therapist.
Jennifer and Sharibeth define SPD, which can present on its own but is often associated with autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and describe how sensory processing impacts speech and language development.
