Feeding challenges can be tricky enough, but when PFD and autism overlap, things can get even more complex. In this course, Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, BCS-S, bridges the medical model with a strengths-based approach to help SLPs support children with ASD and PFD.
Michelle will walk us through common medical etiologies that can underlie PFD in autistic children and how to recognize when a referral for a deeper medical evaluation is needed. She’ll share how to document evaluations, referral requests, and daily notes through a strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming lens that highlights each child’s abilities and celebrates progress every step of the way.
Together, we’ll explore how to empower and educate caregivers to advocate for strengths-based evaluation and intervention while understanding the medical factors that could be driving feeding challenges. You’ll leave with practical strategies to make therapy more effective, compassionate, and family-centered.
There will also be plenty of time for HIPAA-compliant case study questions and answers to brainstorm strategies that help little ones and their caregivers feel set up for success for life.
