Keys to Executive Function: Navigating High School and College in a Virtual World

Kimberly Shore Levin MS, CCC-SLP explores executive function challenges facing adolescents and young people today in a virtual and hybrid academic world. Kim clearly describes the twelve executive functions and their importance in the academic setting. She illustrates how speech-language pathologists have prerequisite skills and experience to play a key role on a mental healthcare team working with students in high school and college who exhibit executive dysfunction. This course highlights the importance of advocating for speech-language pathology services for young people with executive dysfunction.

Mary Beth Hines, MS, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist in Cincinnati, OH. She works in telepractice for Life Speech Pathology as well as the non-profit, Voices for Parkinson's.  After graduating from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, she worked in sales and marketing in Chicago and Boston. She returned to school to pursue a career in speech-language pathology and earned a Master of Science in Communicative Disorders from the University of Redlands in 1999. She worked in adult rehabilitation in Los Angeles and Cincinnati and in private practice, specializing in orofacial myology. Mary Beth is the host of the podcast Keys for SLPs and a moderator for SpeechTherapyPD.

Kimberly Levin

Kimberly Shore Levin, MS, CCC-SLP graduated cum laude from James Madison University in 1995 with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a minor in Psychology. She obtained her Masters of Science in Speech Language Pathology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in December 1996. She worked for over 20 years in various hospitals in the Washington DC area, including the National Rehabilitation Hospital, George Washington University Hospital and the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health. Kim always enjoyed working with the adult neurogenic population and spent most of her career working with medically compromised patients in acute care, acute rehabilitation or outpatient settings. She gained experience with executive function in the context of traumatic brain injury and concussions and always up for a challenge decided to try something different and hone her clinical skills with a new population – adolescents and young adults with underlying mental health issues. Kim has found her new passion working with this age group and can’t imagine doing anything else. Kim has 3 teenagers (17, 16 and 14) and 2 dogs and in her spare time volunteers for Canine Companions for Independence and for her children's high school.
