This course meets ASHA's Supervision PD requirement.
With the new guidelines for supervision training just going into effect, more and more current and potential supervisors are looking for appropriate training. Clinicians are often thrust into the role of supervisor with little or no training in the knowledge and skills required for effective supervision. Lacking formal preparation for the supervisory process, many professionals fall back on the methods modeled by their own former supervisors. In doing so, they attempt to deal with clinical challenges without the benefit of the knowledge available in the current literature. Chief among these challenges is communication, just one of the essential elements in creating an effective supervisory environment. Another critical element is having joy in providing supervision. In this presentation, participants will examine supervision as a discipline, and will gain an understanding of one of the most important essential elements of effective supervision, communication. The presentation will also include a discussion of the ASHA regulations of supervision as well as a discussion of enjoying the provision of supervision.
