Course Description

This course will approach speech and language intervention for those with Down syndrome by examining strengths and weaknesses and how they can be manipulated to improve future success and independence. Participants will learn how to use strengths to weaken needs and how to prevent strengths from becoming weaknesses. Topics in medical management, oral functioning, feeding, speech clarity, literacy, and executive functioning will be explored.

Objective

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Determine which speech and language skills to target for improved speech clarity and language use in any setting (including telepractice).

Describe how to use learning and communication strengths to tackle any goal successfully.

Identify and prevent ineffective communication behaviors to prepare each child, teen, and adult for school, employment, and social success.

Describe how to reduce avoidance and maximize engagement through high frequency speech practice and medical management.

About Presenters

Jennifer Gray

MS, CCC-SLP

Jennifer Gray is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist with 20 years of experience treating those with speech, language, and feeding delays and disorders. She has spent the last 12+ of those years specializing in communication and feeding for those with the intellectual disabilities and motor speech disorders. She owns and operates companies offering consulting and direct services, including Early Intervention and private practice for infants, children, teens, and adults through traditional and telepractice/teletherapy settings. Her experience working in universities, public schools, private practice, and early intervention settings has led her to seek more effective therapeutic approaches for young children with moderate to severe intellectual and motor speech needs. She currently trains therapists, caretakers, and educators to use methods that work teaching courses and speaking at local, state, and national conventions. Jennifer Gray continues to seek and develop innovative and evidence-based practices to ensure functional outcomes for educational, social, and independent living success.
