It is well-known among speech-language pathologists that negative feelings and attitudes towards stuttering are heavier for a client who stutters than the produced disfluencies themselves. Metaphors allow clinicians to apply the Transtheoretical Model to direct speech therapy practices and target negative feelings and attitudes toward stuttering. A metaphorical approach to teaching stuttering facts, causes, strategies, feelings, and attitudes is a skilled intervention to explore deeply and guide clients through stages of change and positive outcomes.
