In this episode, Dr. Treasyri Williams Wood is joined by R. Danielle Scott, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, an Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University Mankato in the Communication Sciences & Disorders Program, leading the efforts in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), which includes leading the Diversity & Inclusion Fellows programming, aimed at recruiting/retaining graduate students of color. This episode will explore the principles of cultural humility and their application in fostering equitable communication practices within the field of speech-language pathology. Participants will examine the intersection of communication justice and cultural humility, gaining insights into practical strategies for integrating cultural humility into clinical practice. Specific topics include understanding cultural competence, navigating cultural differences in assessment and intervention, and promoting inclusive communication environments. Participants will engage in discussions, case studies, and reflective exercises to enhance their cultural competence and promote equitable care for diverse populations.

About Presenters

R. Danielle Scott

PhD, CCC-SLP

R. Danielle Scott, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor at Minnesota State University Mankato in the Communication Sciences & Disorders Program, leading the efforts in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). She teaches courses such as Culturally Responsive Practices, DEI Seminar, and Cultural Humility. Dani graduated from the illustrious Spelman College with her bachelor's degree in Psychology and Comparative Women's Studies and Indiana University with her master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Dani graduated from Grand Canyon University with her Ph.D in general psychology with an emphasis on cognition and instruction. Dani’s research pertains to school-based speech-language pathologists’ therapeutic relationships with culturally and linguistically diverse students. Dani has 6 years' experience as an educational SLP in Atlanta, GA and Houston, TX. Her areas of interest include Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Cultural and Linguistic Diversity, Cultural Humility, Social Justice, and Counseling. Dani was awarded the ASHA Distinguished Early Career Professional Certificate 2020 for her leadership, volunteering and advocacy within the first 5 years of her speech pathology practice. Dani is an active member of the National Black Association of Speech, Language and Hearing (NBASLH).

Treasyri Williams Wood

SLPD, CCC-SLP

Dr. Treasyri (pronounced “Treasure”) Williams Wood is a native of metro Detroit, Michigan. She graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI with a Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and later earned a Master of Science degree in Communicative Sciences & Disorders from Hampton University in Hampton, VA. Treasyri then obtained a Clinical Doctorate in Speech Language Pathology (SLPD) from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Dr. Williams Wood specializes in teaching topics related to neural bases of communication. She enjoys educating fellow professionals, community members, and graduate students. She is passionate about developing person-centered interventions for individuals with voice, swallowing, cognitive, and communicative deficits as a result of neurogenic dysfunction. She has been awarded a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Additionally, she holds a certification from the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. Dr. Williams Wood was elected to the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) Board of Directors as a Member at Large in 2022 and is currently serving a 2-year term. She also serves on the SIG 2 Neurogenic Disorders Professional Development Committee (PDC). She is delighted to utilize her specialized training to lead a no-fee, donation-based speech and language clinic in her role as Director of Clinical Education and Clinical Associate Professor at DePaul University in Chicago, IL.
