Executive Function Skills for Managing the Home

Executive Function Skills for Managing the Home

As human beings, we possess a built-in capacity to accomplish goals and meet challenges through the use of high-level cognitive functions known as executive functioning skills. These skills help us decide which tasks to prioritize, how to manage our time, and how to regulate our emotions throughout the day.

In this advanced session, presenter Adina Soclof, MS, CCC-SLP, will take a deep dive into how executive functioning impacts a parent’s ability to manage the many responsibilities of home and family life. Parents with strong executive skills are better equipped to create structure, maintain routines, and help their children develop these same abilities. In contrast, when these skills are underdeveloped, everyday tasks and transitions—like getting out the door in the morning or managing bedtime—can become daily stressors.

This course will explore executive functioning challenges that commonly arise for both parents and children, especially during high-stress transition times. You’ll learn evidence-informed strategies to support planning, organization, time management, emotional control, and working memory. Specific tools and techniques will be shared to address time blindness, strengthen working memory, boost productivity, and build effective routines and task management systems. You'll also learn practical language to support smoother transitions and emotional regulation throughout the day.
