In this episode, Erin and Dr. Joleen Fernald explore the topic of selective mutism. Many SLPs may have had a patient or two in their career with a possible selective mutism diagnosis. Still, Dr. Fernald has dedicated her career to supporting this population in a trauma-informed way that supports their authentic self. Erin and Dr. Fernald discuss what selective mutism is and what the SLP's role is. Dr. Fernald also shares the DIR method she developed and how the SLP can implement it within their practice with this population. Erin and Dr. Fernald also dive into autism and selective mutism and some of the changes that are being advocated for within the neurodivergent population.
