The Core Curriculum assumes certain social thinking concepts to be present and developing along a typical course in students. Students with diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), nonverbal learning disability (NVLD), language disorder, anxiety disorder, social communication disorder, or twice exceptional often struggle with this social learning, which can limit their ability to learn. In this course, Anna Vagin, PhD, examines the social cognition concepts central to these standards and strategies for students with social learning challenges.
Anna begins by reviewing multiple outcome standards across the Core Curriculum, with a focus on literacy and classroom communication. Understanding intention, behavior, and effect is an issue for most students with social learning challenges, and you'll learn strategies for building this understanding. The course also looks at factors that interfere with inference, whether in a picture book, textbook, media excerpt, or social situation, along with approaches for intervention, and Anna defines jump cuts.
Emotional development and its role in the Core Curriculum are another focus, including ways to support emotional learning in individual or group therapy or in the classroom. Anna also addresses the social cognitive constructs underlying conversation and classroom discussion, the importance of perspective, emotions, and flexibility, and basic conversational choices. You'll learn a systematic way of working on spontaneous conversation and how to use a conversation map to help students expand their conversation skills, with therapy video examples throughout.
