Empowering Providers Through Transforming Pediatric Feeding Journeys

When working with children with pediatric feeding disorder (PFD), outcomes are only as strong as the team supporting them. This free, five-part series brings pediatricians and speech-language pathologists together to strengthen interprofessional practice across the complex factors that shape pediatric feeding disorder.

From foundational understanding to case-based application, each session builds on the last to help you think more holistically, collaborate more effectively, and better support children and their families. Join us live on Thursdays beginning April 30, or sign up for the sessions most relevant to your work.

This session sets the stage with a clear, practical foundation for understanding pediatric feeding disorder. You will explore how PFD differs from picky eating, how it is defined across domains, and why early identification matters. This is the starting point for building a shared language across disciplines and recognizing when a child needs more than reassurance.
Session objectives
Describe Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD), including its diagnostic criteria, four-domain framework (medical, nutrition, feeding skill, and psychosocial), and the role of caregiver experience in assessment and care.
Explain the developmental progression of feeding in early childhood and recognize early warning signs that may indicate disruption in feeding development.
Identify the clinical overlap and distinctions between Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), including when untreated PFD may progress to ARFID and opportunities for early identification and referral.

Medical factors play a critical role in feeding and swallowing, and they are often where collaboration is most essential. This session focuses on identifying and managing underlying medical contributors, including airway, gastrointestinal, and overall health considerations. You will gain a clearer understanding of when to refer, how to collaborate with physicians, and how medical complexity impacts feeding outcomes.
Session objectives
Define the “Medical Domain” of Pediatric Feeding Disorder.
List two strategies for successful collaboration between SLP and the General Pediatrician.
Describe the role and responsibilities of speciality physicians in the diagnosis and management of the “Medical Domain” of Pediatric Feeding Disorder.

Session objectives
Describe a conceptual framework that allows professionals and families to consider the impacts of social contextual factors for pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders.
Identify the roles and responsibilities for speech-language pathologists in the NICU, early intervention, and school-based settings for pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders.
