R-R-R-R wins the prize for the widest variety of treatment methods and the most extreme assortment of stim-techniques of any speech sound we work with. I’ve been in our illustrious field for 30+ years. And “R” STILL is a challenge.

Well, I’m throwing in my two cents over the course of two hours in this video (The Complete R Remediation Course), and see if we can do something about the consistency and reliability of /r/ remediation. I’m going to share with you a different way of analyzing the /r/ that only contains three production elements, as well as several therapy techniques that I’ve done for years that’s yielded amazing results.

Following is little about the /r/ [we’ll do a deep dive on /r/ in the video]. Although every child’s manner of trying to produce a good /r/ is unique, there are commonalities. Knowing these specifics gives us glues to personalizing their instruction. In addition, there are critical production components of the /r/ that must be done to form a correct sounding /r/. Let’s briefly address the first one.

Do any of your /r/ distortion kids have any of the following characteristics when they say their brand of “r”?

§ Lips are rounded; [need to un-pucker those lips]

§ Tongue is low; [need to get the tongue above the horizontal midline]

§ Tongue is relaxed; [need some tension]

§ Air moves straight through; [need the air to gather within a resonance chamber], and

§ Emphasis is toward the front; [need the emphasis either in the back or mid-mouth].

The attempted “r” result is a sound that’s close to, but not exactly, a sustained /Ư/ (as in book). We’ve all heard it. And on an artic test, for an initial /r/ we transcribe it as /w/. Why a /w/? When the lips un-pucker from /Ư/, the sound sounds like a /w/.

During the course we’ll parse /r/ like you’ve never parsed /r/. And we’ll begin the process with your /r/ production. You’ll be asked to focus, feel, and analyze your /r/.

As a sneak preview, just how DO you make your/r/? Do you do a back-up /r/ (back elevated) or a retroflex /r/ (back elevated and front curled)? Or quite possibly do you do both? A few of us do, you know. There is a higher prevalence of one of the above, and it’s not “both.” Which one do you think it is?

You’ll not only glean a solid foundation about the /r/, you’ll do oral capability-building tasks, and learn about solidification tasks (how to establish movement memory), and

carryover strategies. We’re going waaaay beyond just doing auditory sound stim and looking at pictures.

When I was in the schools, I coveted my time; meaning it was precious and I had very little of it. I always felt I had to make my therapy-time count. Besides, I had over 80 little people relying on me and a high percentage of them were r-kids. You may be in the same boat; searching for r-answers that make sense, that work, that are easy to do, and that the kids will like.
