Ever thought about starting a private practice, now or in the future? In this training, Jena Castro-Casbon, MS CCC-SLP will discuss the steps that SLPs follow in the path to start a successful private practice. Jena is here to dispel some common misconceptions regarding what a private practice has to “look” like, who it has to treat, and how you have to run it. Spoiler alert: there are no two private practices alike. The beauty of a private practice is that you can make it into whatever you want it to be. That’s some incredible flexibility.

Leigh Ann Porter earned her master’s in Communication Sciences from the University of Central Florida in 2013, and has enjoyed being an SLP ever since. While at UCF, Leigh Ann was part of a grant to prepare SLPs to work with English Language Learners, earning a graduate certificate of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Leigh Ann now resides in Kansas City where she divides her time working across outpatient, acute, and inpatient rehab settings. She has presented courses registered for ASHA CEUs to regional SLPs on topics such as how the respiratory system and cough influence dysphagia, a review of the literature on dysphagia exercises, and generating measurable dysphagia goals. For multidisciplinary continuing education with PTs and OTs, Leigh Ann has presented on topics such as Cognitive Retraining with an emphasis on memory strategies, and the SLP’s scope of practice & making appropriate patient referrals to the SLP.

Jena H. Castro-Casbon is a private practice consultant and author who has helped thousands of speech-language pathologists start and grow their own private practices through her company, The Independent Clinician. She has written articles for The ASHA Leader and was an invited presenter at ASHA Connect (2017). Jena also teaches and serves as a Clinical Instructor at Emerson College in Boston, MA. Jena lives in Boston, MA and is a wife and mama to two young boys.
