Course Description

In this episode, Michelle is joined by Carol A. Page, PhD, CCC-SLP, ATP, CBIS, the Director of the South Carolina Assistive Technology Program (SCATP) at the USC School of Medicine, from Episode 24, “AAC is more than Pictures and Velcro. Have you worked with a child who needed an AAC device, but had limited vision?  Maybe they were diagnosed with a CVI and you were scratching your head as to what that diagnosis is, then afraid to move forward with functional treatment?  Dr. Carol Page educates us on Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI), early warning signs for a CVI if the little one you’re working with doesn’t have a diagnosis yet, and then how to go about considering an AAC device including considering eye gaze equipment when completing evaluations and treatments.

About Presenters

Michelle Dawson

Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP, CLC, BCS-S, serves as the Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor with James Madison University. Additionally, she is the acclaimed host of “First Bite: Fed, Fun, Functional” a weekly Speech Therapy Podcast that addresses “all thangs” Pediatric Speech Therapy, and is presented by SpeechTherapyPD.com. Michelle authored, "Chasing the Swallow: Truth, Science, and Hope for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders". She is an accomplished lecturer; traveling across the nation delivering courses on best practices for the evaluation and treatment of the medically complex infant, toddlers, and children with respect to their pediatric oropharyngeal dysphagia, pediatric feeding disorder, as well as language acquisition within the framework of Early Intervention. She has served as the Treasurer for the Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP), is a Past President of the South Carolina Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (SCSHA), a graduate of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Leadership Development Program (ASHA LDP), a recipient of the Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Champion from Feeding Matters, a recipient of the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Clinical Achievement from the SCSHA, a recipient of the State Clinical Achievement Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Foundation, recognized as an ASHA Innovator in 2023, and ten-time recipient of ASHA’s ACE Award for continuing education.

Carol A. Page is the Director of the South Carolina Assistive Technology Program (SCATP) at the USC School of Medicine, a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Center for Disability Resources, Department of Pediatrics. Carol is also an Adjunct Faculty member for the University of South Carolina Communication Sciences and Disorders and Education departments. She received her PhD degree in speech-language pathology from the University of South Carolina, her assistive technology professional certification from RESNA, and her Brain Injury Specialist certification from the Brain Injury Association of America. Carol provides trainings at a local, state, national and international level on assistive technology for persons with disabilities of all ages, their caregivers and professionals who serve them. She is the 2017 recipient of the Norman J. Arnold Alumni Award from the USC School of Public Health and the 2017 Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Clinical Achievement from the SC Speech-Language Hearing Association.
